Meals in Norway

United Kingdom: Meals - Steak Pie with Puff Pasty

The 3 traditional meals of Norway are similar to other European countries, but with a unique flare all their own. Breakfast in Norway is the most important meal of the day, and consists of hearty cereals or fresh bread and milk. Whole wheat bread is the most popular and it’s often spread with sumptuous cheese and ham or a sweet fruit jam. There’s also a warm winter porridge of oatmeal drizzled with natural sugar and raisins.

Lunch, or lunsj, in Norway is a traditional matpakke, or open sandwich wrapped in a special paper. The most popular spreads for sandwiches in Norway include fresh cheese, ham, liver paste, egg, or caviar. Traditionally, these sandwiches are always home-made, and fresh as can be!

Traditionally the dinner, or middag, of Norway is the only warm meal of the day. It’s served early anytime from 3 to 7pm in the countryside. This meal is very simple, and is always accompanied by hearty boiled potatoes! Kjottkaker meatballs with gravy are a great option, or lapskaus meat stew. Always served with flatbrod, or flatbread on the side! Keeps you warm in the cool winters of Norway.
